Overview

The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay seeks a versatile and highly skilled Assistant Conductor to join a dynamic team that prioritizes artistic excellence, collaboration, and is committed to diversity, equity and access for members of The Master Chorale, Tampa Bay’s premiere symphonic chorus. The Assistant Conductor reports to the Artistic Director and performs conducting and artistic administrative duties as specified by the Artistic Director.

 

Title: Assistant Conductor

Organization: The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay (501(c)3 Choral Masterworks Festival, Inc.)

Job Type: 1099 Contract Position; Flexible schedule with regular required hours to include Tuesday evenings from 6-10:30 pm and some other evenings and weekends throughout the season.

Salary: $10,000 – $12,000, commensurate with experience

Minimum Education: Master’s Degree preferred

Minimum Experience: 3+ years of choral directing experience

Application Deadline: Applications will be considered on a rolling basis through May 28, 2023, or until filled. Live auditions for select candidates will be held on June 20, 2023 from 7:30-10pm.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Serve as cover conductor for the AD for all MCTB rehearsals and performances, including MCTB-produced concerts, collaborations with community partners like The Florida Orchestra, and additional performance engagements 

    • Opportunities for the AC to conduct selected works and/or programs may be identified by the AD during the season.

  • Conduct preparatory and sectional rehearsals as needed

  • Perform MCTB-produced rehearsal and concert production duties related to stage management and guest artist relations

  • Perform administrative duties related to roster management, attendance, singer communications, and artistic production logistics for rehearsals and performances

  • Serve as a singing member of MCTB and attend rehearsals to collect and organize markings and musical details

  • Assist in auditioning new chorister applicants

  • Participate in MCTB educational outreach activities and planning, as requested

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: 

The Assistant Conductor is expected to be a versatile and highly skilled musician who can successfully demonstrate leadership of a symphonic chorus and ability to work effectively with professional musicians, manage artistic concert production logistics, and represent the Artistic Director and the organization. Desired qualifications include:

 

  • Master’s degree preferred, preferably in choral conducting, music performance, or music education field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be an acceptable substitute for these degrees.

  • 3+ years of choral directing experience

  • Thorough understanding of the voice and choral techniques

  • Comprehensive knowledge of choral repertoire

  • Versatility to communicate in a wide variety of musical styles

  • Significant concert production logistics management experience

  • Keyboard skills (at the level of leading a sectional from the piano) are desirable, but not required

  • Transparent and high integrity work ethic.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.

  • Strong time management and project management skills.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience working with volunteers and facilitating large groups.

  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to work in multiple locations for various performances throughout a season.

  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the organization.

 

About The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay

The Master Chorale is an auditioned, highly-select large volunteer chorus embracing a broad representation of singers from the entire Tampa Bay area. With a decades-long tradition of elevating the cultural experience of west central Florida, the Chorale traditionally maintains a roster of 150+ singers, performs 20 – 25 concerts a year, has internationally distributed recordings, commissions important contemporary choral composers, and presents engaging community-singing events, and inspiring music education programs locally and online. The Master Chorale is the Principal Chorus for The Florida Orchestra and Artist-In-Residence at the University of South Florida College of the Arts School of Music.

    • Videos should be facing the conductor so that their gestures can be seen clearly

    • Please ensure videos have high quality sound so that both instructions and the choir can be clearly heard

    • Videos should be from within the last 3 years
